Bee Kind – Create a Bee Hotel & Nectary
January 18 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Join Simone Todd and the team from Our Life Our Way in this hands-on workshop, to make your own bee-hotel using natural and upcycled materials.
You’ll learn about native bees and their role in maintaining biodiversity, how to entice them to your garden and how to encourage them to stay.
And no matter what shade of green thumb you are, learn about how to set up a bee friendly garden- your very own nectary. We will have a stack of materials on hand but please feel free to bring along some of your own. This might include:
- old bamboo stakes (or cuttings if you have bamboo growing)
- hollow stalks from fennel, parsley, lovage, elder, etc
- potters clay that is past its best
- short logs (18-20cm in length and up to 10cm diameter)
- small pine cones, or similar
- blocks of building timber (MUST be untreated…if you’re unsure, better leave it out)
If you have a container you would like to build your bee-hotel in, bring that along too, eg a wooden box (untreated timber), a metal box or extra-large tin can, a sturdy terracotta pot or pipe, even an old bread tin. Get creative and see what you can come up with.
If you get stuck, we’ll have some options there for you to choose from and work with.
This workshop includes a catered afternoon tea.
If you have a cordless drill, a saw and/or secateurs please bring them along to help make your bee hotel.
This workshop will be held outdoors so please dress accordingly, with UV protection such as sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
YOU’LL GO HOME WITH:
A small native bee hotel you construct during the workshop
A packet of seeds to start your Nectary
Recommended Age 13 +
This workshop is the second of the ‘Made It Myself – Sharing with Others’ series, run by Our Life Our Way, on behalf of Transition Streets Geelong, supported by the City of Greater Geelong through its Environment and Sustainability program
